Nightmare

Eyes closed, she dreams.
A dead forest,
dried up leaves rustle
and scatter with the winds.

Her white dress trails behind her.
The tight-laced corset like a shackle.
The lace and silk weigh her down,heaviness growing with each step.
Pearls drape around her neck but their hold chokes her.

Bare feet move
across the forest floor.
She doesn't know where she is going,
or where she is.

She finds a piece of broken glass,
it's reflective surface flashing as she picks it up.
A drop of water splashes upon it.
She looks to the sky,but it has not yet begun to rain.

There are no clouds
but neither is there sun.
The sky shows crimson red,
as if the heavens themselves were bleeding.

Two more drops hit the piece of mirror.
She raises her hand to her face,
and finds her cheeks wet with tears.
She hadn't realized she'd been silently crying.

Everything around her is dead.
Despair and horror cling at her fragile mind.
She acknowledges that she too will die,
perish like all else.

She weeps loudly, now, frightened.
She can go on no further.
She is exhausted.
Body, mind, and soul.

The mirror in her hand vanishes.
The leaves all turn to dust.
The trees to ash.
The sky fading into a black oblivion.

At last, there is darkness.
She sees him emerging out of the shadows,
coming towards her like some grotesque monster.
She wakes up screaming.
